An often overlooked maintenance item on these old cassette tapes is the splicing tape that joins the leader tape at the reel with the recorded tape.  Due to age it is common for the old tape to let go, inside the tape shell.  So if this happens and your cassette shell is the sealed type with no screws.  The only way to repair this is to pop the shell open.  Which more often than not results in the shell being completely ruined or heavily damaged.  Be pro-active and replace that piece of splicing tape before this happens.  
 
This splicing tape is pre-cut into 9/16" long pieces.  The red color makes it a little easier to see things when replacing the splice on clear and white leader tape.  This can also be used to do repairs on the PlayTape and Apollon/HiPac formats (pretty much any 1/8" tape format).
